What is the India-India Residency 2009?
Since its beginnings, bar1 has emphasised the importance of an artist exchange within India, since large distances separate the
largely urban centres where artists work and no long-distance exchange of views can match the intensity of a personal experience
of the arts scene and the cultural life of a city.

A first India-India Residency, worked out together with IFA, took place from July to September 2008 with 7 artists from Mysore,
Baroda, Mumbai, Jammu, Kolkata and Mhow and with a final exhibition in an old bungalow in Frazer Town..

The second India- India Residency with 4 guests, supported by IFA, is currently taking place, partly based at the bar1-studio
apartment in Vivekanandanagar, Bengaluru (from July – September 2009). Last year we had got 44 applications and this time
over 100.This indicates how vital is the need for exchange programmes for Indian artists within India. A particularity of this second
India- India Residency is that 2 of its guests from outside intend to continue their work within the city, a chance for us to introduce
them.

Our concept stressed the interdisciplinary interactions of the guests among themselves, with Bengaluru and with its arts scene,
rather than the production of individual work.

Also, despite the emphasis on interaction, the intention was never to control or streamline the outcomes of this residency. We
believe in artistic freedom. People should do what they believe they are best at doing.
